Why Fantasy?

Because it’s magical!

Selecting the genre for your writing marks the initial decision you face when embarking on a book. Comedy, romance, mystery, thriller—the options are endless.

To me, the choice is clear. Imagine weaving all these elements together into an unforgettable tale. Infuse magic into your romances, sprinkle laughter throughout your dialogues, and lace mystery into the narrative. Fantasy becomes a canvas where anything and everything can occur. A story untethered by external rules, bound only by the ones you create.

Struggling to find inspiration? Leverage existing stories, reshaping them as your imagination sees fit. Ever envisioned Snow White defying the Evil Queen? Dreamed of Cinderella possessing powers at her sixteenth birthday, reclaiming her rightful place? It’s all possible through retellings—forge your version, make it exceptional.

Notably, series creation warrants consideration. Sequels in genres like romance can often falter in comparison to their predecessors, unless you’re Colleen Hoover, of course. However, this rule doesn’t hold within the realm of Fantasy. Numerous instances exist where second, third, or even fourth books equal or surpass the first in a series. Think A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), The Chronicles of Narnia, and the Harry Potter series.

Of course, certain universal factors apply, such as character development. Commencing with the basics—appearance, attitudes, motivations—these foundations merge with the magical. Does your character possess unique abilities? Command magic or wield extraordinary gifts? Can they soar through the skies, breathe underwater, conjure ice, or bear venomous saliva? Imagination knows no bounds.

Embarking into the world of fantasy, your inaugural book often focuses on rules and world-building, subsequently expanding your magical repertoire.

Moreover, fantasy stands among the world’s most-read genres, appealing to various audiences. Whether kids, middle-grade readers, young adults, new adults, or adults themselves, fantasy captures hearts when aimed at the right market.

In essence, fantasy writers transport readers to realms of adventure, unpredictability, and invention, all while imparting meaningful lessons. It might be the child hesitant to lie for fear of elongating their nose, witnessing a young woman reclaim freedom and love from her captor, or observing an individual in despair find well-deserved happiness. Sometimes, it’s about escaping reality for a few hours. Whatever the impetus, it’s crucial to have it present.

After all, hundreds of thousands of dedicated readers eagerly await new fantasy releases, ready to be swept away.
